Abstract

This study aims to investigate the illocutionary structure and pragmatic argumentation in the poetic discourse of Al-Sharif Al-Radhi, taking the poem "Ya Zabyata Al-Ban" as an analytical model, within a pragmatic-rhetorical framework. The research addresses the central question of how speech acts interact with rhetorical structures in poetic discourse to perform argumentative functions that go beyond mere. description and aesthetic expression. The study adopts a pragmatic approach based primarily on John Searle's Speech Act Theory, while drawing on concepts from classical Arabic rhetoric-epecially the principle of contextual appropriateness (muqtada al-hal)- to elucidate the illocutionary force of poetic utterances. The analysis is organized into two main sections: the first examines direct and indirect speech acts in the poem according to Searle's fivefold classification, while the second explores pragmatic argumentation mechanisms, such as complaint, remembrance, emotional paradox, and cultural memory, as persuasive strategies aimed at influencing the addressee The study concludes that Al-Sharif Al-Radhi's poetic discourse is not limited to emotional expression, but rather constitutes a complex pragmatic-argumentative structure in which rhetorical imagery functions as an illocutionary and persuasive device. The findings highlight the significance of Arabic rhetoric as a foundational framework for pragmatic analysis and demonstrate that applying pragmatic perspectives to classical poetry offers deeper insights into its communicative and argumentative dimensions
