Altruistic behavior among students of the Department of Psychological Counseling

Altruism is one of the concepts that has occupied the attention of many researchers in the field of mental health, especially with regard to the study of behavior, as this concept is considered a factor that has a significant impact on mental health. Altruistic behavior is one of the most important types of social behavior that helps the cohesion, well-being and progress of society, as in a society in which there are many individuals who are characterized by altruism, the relationships and interactions between its members tend to be based on love and sympathy, so peace prevails and everyone feels satisfied. The research aims to identify altruistic behavior in University students and the differences in altruistic behavior are known according to the gender variable (males - females). To achieve the objectives of the research, a representative sample of society must be chosen, amounting to (200) male and female students, with (100) male and (100) female students at Al-Mustansiriya University, College of Education The researcher built a scale of altruistic behavior, which amounted to (30) items, and validity and reliability were extracted. The results showed the following:
1- University students have altruistic behavior.
2- There are differences in altruistic behavior according to the gender variable (males - females) in favor of males.
In light of the results, the researcher developed a number of recommendations and proposals.
