Epistemology in the thought of Imam Ali (peace be upon him): From philosophical theorizing to educational experimentation

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the epistemological foundations in the thought of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and demonstrate the possibility of transferring them from the level of philosophical theorizing to the educational field. The research adopted an analytical approach in studying the texts of the Imam (peace be upon him) found in Nahj al-Balagha to reveal the features of the epistemological structure, its sources, and its intellectual and educational dimensions. Foremost among these are reason as a tool for understanding and discernment, and revelation and the Holy Quran as the highest source of guidance and certain knowledge. This is further complemented by experience, reflection, and consideration as means of expanding human understanding and penetrating insight. The research culminates in the close relationship between knowledge and action, as knowledge—according to his epistemological conception—is not complete except by its transformation into behavior and practice.
