Abstract

In general, Arab-Islamic education in Senegal has gone through several stages: from ancient books, then schools and institutes, to contemporary (modern) Qur’anic schools.

As for government schools, each of the successive governments after independence played a special role, particularly in the Arabic language and Islamic education, between development and disruption in government educational institutions.

Accordingly, this research briefly studies the situation of the Arab-Islamic education that Senegal followed before the advent of European colonialism. When the latter came, it completely removed everything related to Arabic from the administration, and tried to close Quranic schools and prevent Arabic education in government schools. Before leaving the country, he prepared his successors and established a secular Christian state in Senegal When these people assumed the leadership of the state, it was as if they had followed his (colonial) approach, even if their approaches differed. Therefore, we wonder: What is the position of the presidents of Senegal towards Arab-Islamic education with the secularization of the state? What is the position of the Senegalese people regarding Arab-Islamic education? What position does Arab-Islamic education occupy in Senegalese political systems? To answer all these questions, the research will address the status of the Arab-Islamic education that Senegal taught.
