A collective counseling program (proposed) to improve grades students at the university

Abstract

The research aims to build a suggested group counseling program suitable for training students at Mustansiriyah University - College of Education - Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance on studying to improve their academic grades. This research sought to identify the answer to the following question: What are the components of the proposed and existing group counseling program? On training on the skill of studying, which may contribute to what has been applied in improving students’ grades at the university.

The research community for which this counseling program was built consists of students at Mustansiriyah University - College of Education - Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance. On the skill of studying, and among these studies is the study of Abu Alia (1993), and the study of Al-Tarawneh (2005).

This program consisted of (15) counseling sessions ranging in duration from (60) minutes to (90) minutes. The first session aimed to get to know each other and build a mentoring relationship. The second session aimed at introducing students to the concept of improving grades. The third session, to the penultimate one, aimed at training students. On the skill of studying, organizing time, focusing attention during the lecture, recording notes during the lecture, remembering and forgetting, how to review courses, how to prepare for the exam, and dealing with exam anxiety. Modeling - cooperative education - brainstorming-feedback- emergency management - homework - instructions - silent reading - relaxation

The researcher recommends applying the proposed collective counseling program to all students at -Mustansiriya University and colleges through the psychological and academic counseling centers in these colleges and universities
