Abstract

In her book The History of Fatimid Egypt, the orientalist Simenova sheds light on the period of Fatimid rule in Egypt, considering it a pivotal phase in Islamic and Middle Eastern history. The author discusses the Shiite origins of the Fatimid state and its transition from North Africa to Egypt in 969 AD, when Caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah founded the city of Cairo and made it the capital of the state. Simenova highlights the political and religious roles played by the Fatimids in consolidating their doctrine, in addition to their contributions to cultural, scientific, and economic fields. She also examines the internal and external challenges the state faced and their impact on Egyptian society. This study is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the Fatimids' place in Egypt’s history, beyond traditional narratives . The book reflects an orientalist analytical perspective aimed at understanding the nature of Fatimid rule and its various historical dimensions.
