Abstract

This research explores the virtues and scholarly aspects of the personality of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) as presented in the book Tarikh al-Islam wa Wafayat al-Mashahir wa al-A’lam by Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi. Although al-Dhahabi was not always fair in presenting the merits of the Imam, the prominent position that Imam Ali holds in Islam compelled the author to acknowledge elements of his vast knowledge, profound asceticism, and noble virtues. The study focuses on analyzing al-Dhahabi’s narrations concerning the Imam’s knowledge, jurisprudence, ascetic sayings, and actions that demonstrate his justice and wisdom. It also examines the degree of objectivity in al-Dhahabi’s accounts and considers the historical contexts that influenced his style of presentation. The research concludes that the personality of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) remains a towering example of scholarship, asceticism, and moral excellence—one that continues to assert its presence even in the most reserved historical sources.
