Grammatical Causation in the Thought of Ibn Al-Warraq (d. 381 AH): An Analytical Study of his Book "ilal al-Nahw"

Abstract

This research presents an in-depth study of the intellectual framework of one of the most prominent grammarians of the 4th Century AH, Abu al-Hasan Ibn al-Warraq (d. 381 AH), through his seminal work, "ilal al-Nahw" (The Rationales of Grammar). The significance of this study lies in uncovering the analytical methodology adopted by Ibn al-Warraq, which skillfully synthesized linguistic tradition (Sama’) with logical and rational analysis, influenced by the flourishing intellectual climate of his era. The practical chapters of this research explore Ibn al-Warraq’s philosophy in justifying grammatical rulings across various categories, including nominatives (Marfu’at), accusatives (Mansubat), genitives (Majrurat), and verbs. Special attention is given to the "Dialectical Rationale" and the "Rationale of the Rationale," through which the author demonstrated his mastery in debating the views of various grammatical schools. The study reveals Ibn al-Warraq’s methodological independence; he was not merely a transmitter of the Basran or Kufan doctrines, but rather a critical arbiter and evaluator who possessed rigorous tools of linguistic analogy (Analogy). The research concludes with several key findings, most notably that Ibn al-Warraq succeeded in transforming grammar from a set of rigid pedagogical rules into a comprehensive philosophical system. This system links grammatical inflection to semantic meaning and contextual function. Furthermore, the study highlights how the author’s background in the profession of "Warraqa" (manuscript production) enriched his work with diverse knowledge and scholarly depth, positioning his book as a vital link in the historical evolution of the principles of Arabic grammar.
